CULINARY USES

Used in the preparation of handmade ice cream, fine desserts, yogurts, juices, and cocktails.

DESCRIPTION OF THE FRUIT

This fruit is oval in shape, and can measure up to 30 cm and weigh from 2 to 7 kg. It is delicate, with a greenish skin. The pulp is white, creamy, juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic.

ORIGIN

ITS SCIENTIFIC NAME IS ANNONA MURICATA, AND IT FORMS PART OF THE ANNONACEAE FAMILY, JUST LIKE THE CHERIMOYA, ALTHOUGH IT BELONGS TO A DIFFERENT GENUS.

The origins of the soursop are unclear, although some studies have traced it to the Caribbean. What is known for certain, however, is that ceramic vessels have been found with depictions of this fruit when excavating pre-Columbian tombs along the Peruvian coastline. Evidence of its consumption has been found in the Peruvian Chimú culture, dating back 1,200 years.

It is also known by the name of graviola.
